Makkunrai Makkutana ‘The Woman who questions...’ – SP Indonesia

Synopsis: This film tells the story of the journey and reflections of a Muslim woman who encountered a sad case that befell a young teenage girl, Siti. Siti was sentenced to whipping from her family or leaders of society in a Muslim village – Padang, Bulukumba, South Sulawesi. The main female lead asked some younger and older women whether they agreed with whipping as a punishment. One day she came to Padang Village and met with Siti and her family to talk about what they had experienced. She obtained the opinions of leaders in the village and the district Legal Bureau of Bulukumba. From the perspective of a Muslim woman, this film relates various controversial facts underlying whipping as a punishment because it does not accord with the values of Islam that the protagonist grew up with, nor with the secular state system in Indonesia.
